2.0 hours MCLE credit, including 2.0* hours Professional Responsibility MCLE credit in the following category: Professionalism, Civility, or Legal Ethics credit

Limited scope representation offers a practical, cost‑effective approach that benefits both attorneys and clients: clients can hire a lawyer for only the portions of a case where professional help is most needed, and attorneys can better manage their workload while still delivering high‑quality service. This program provides a thorough exploration of limited scope representation—what it is, when it works best, the obstacles that can limit its use, and strategies for overcoming those challenges. Topics covered include:

  • Professional conduct rules and Supreme Court requirements governing limited scope work
  • Practical applications of limited scope representation inside and outside the courtroom
  • Ethical and malpractice considerations when evaluating whether to accept a limited engagement
  • Approaches for working with judges who may be unfamiliar with limited scope arrangements
  • Real‑world scenarios illustrating what experienced practitioners would—or would not—do in various limited scope situations

Program Moderator:

Marisa Wiesman, Deputy Director of Strategic Planning, Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, Chicago

Welcome and Opening Remarks

Hon. David K. Overstreet, Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. An Overview and Discussion of Limited Scope Representation

  • Limited Scope Representation Overview

Gain a better understand of limited scope representation, how it is used both in and out of the courtroom, and the applicable rules (RPC 1.2 and SCR 13) you need to know. A summary of the judicial survey results is included.

Marisa Wiesman, Deputy Director of Strategic Planning, Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, Chicago

  • Attorney and Judicial Panel Discussion

Don’t miss this panel discussion, where our speakers share how they have incorporated limited scope representation into their own practices or observed its use in the courtroom. The panel also addresses key considerations such as ethical and malpractice issues, as well as strategies for attorneys who encounter judges unfamiliar with limited scope appearances. Hypothetical scenarios will be presenting, giving attendees the opportunity to ask questions regarding the applicability of limited scope representation in each situation.

Moderator: Michael Bergmann, Executive Director, Public Interest Law Initiative, Chicago

Hon. Stacy L. Campbell, 20th Judicial Circuit

Kendall V. Sibala, Senior Staff Attorney, Land of Lincoln Legal Aid, St. Louis

12:00 – 12:15 p.m. Break

12:15 – 1:15 p.m. Small Group Discussion: Where Do We Go From Here?

Take this opportunity to break into small groups for an interactive discussion on the future of limited scope representation. Each group will be guided by a facilitator experienced in LSR and supported by a recorder who will capture key points from the conversation. Potential discussion topics include integrating LSR into a law practice, understanding why limited scope appearances have not gained broader traction, evaluating whether LSR effectively expands access to justice, and identifying tools or resources that could make LSR easier to implement. At the end of the small‑group sessions, time will be set aside for a full‑group review of each group’s insights and conclusions.

Moderator: Marisa Wiesman, Deputy Director of Strategic Planning, Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, Chicago
